Welcome to Sacred Heart Church

"Young people of America and the World, listen to what Christ the redeemer, is saying to you."       The Pope John Paul II

Who are we?  A group of teens trying to be disciples of Jesus Christ and His new Way. We are diverse, inclusive, reverent, somewhat boisterous, very alive … and searching for God and God's will in the Catholic tradition.

What do we do?  Well, just check below -- we've got our special upcoming events, pictures from past events, and a general overview of teen life at Sacred Heart in Salinas!

General Overview

sunday nights

1. The "Sunday 5" Youth Mass
At the weekly Sunday 5 pm Mass, teens and their families experience the depths of God's love through the Word, the community, and the Eucharist. Teens are involved in all aspects of the Mass, including as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, alter servers, and musicians. The music is upbeat and includes some classics along with the great contemporary Christian songs!

2. Weekly Youth Group
Following the Sunday 5, the youth leaders bring the teens deeper into their Catholic faith at youth group. As a faith community, the teens grow in understanding of what it means to be young and Catholic in the new millennium. The teens are affirmed, educated, and challenged to live the Gospel. Yeah, there are some great games and skits too. It's amazing what you can do with a blender!

time to chill

Faith isn't all prayer and Mass and praise and worship and Adoration and community service. Sometimes it's about hanging out, laughing together, and getting to know each other. (As an aside, at a recent retreat, a group of boys stayed up late playing X-Box in their room. Our first reaction was WHAT??!! Then we realized, hey, ministry happens even at 2am playing X-Box.)  Check the calendar or list of upcoming eventsfor a full description of what's coming up!

retreats

Yosimite Retreat PictureWe do two weekend retreats during the year -- the Second Year Confirmation retreat in Lent and the Yosemite youth group retreat in late November. Need to recharge your faith batteries? Need a weekend away from all the day-to-day stress and just focus on God?? Want to sing crazy songs, pray, play, act, meditate, eat, bond with each other - and then start all over again? The youth group retreats are for you! Take a look at the retreat photos for a sense of what goes on.

faith in action

Faith is not individual, nor is it a gift to be kept inside. Instead we are called to be part of a community and help create relationships of love, trust and service. That's easy enough to say - but how to do it? If we are to work building up the kingdom of heaven here on earth, where do we start? One good place is to affirm the dignity of ALL persons,, in their person, their vocation, and their basic needs. We do this by

1. Providing hospitality at Dorothy's Kitchen (see calendar)
2. Marching in the Walk in San Francisco
3. Supporting ALBA and its mission of advancing the economic viability, social equity, and ecological land management for limited-resources farmers on the Central Coast

This is just a start. If you have an idea for community outreach, contact us. (Be prepared, of course, to be asked to help out!)  The book of James puts it bluntly: "faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead" (James 2:17). Come be alive!
