Carnac The Magnificant

« Back to What About?

Need an answer to that burning question? Come and approach Carnac for the wisdom of the ages . . .

Q: When flipping a penny, is it better to call heads or tails? A: You shouldn't be betting. Shame on you. But because you asked, here's the answer: it depends. If you have a "lucky side," farbeit for me to tell you to change. But if you want to play the odds, pick tails. The heads picture weighs more, so it ends up on the bottom 50.5% of the time. Maybe not a big difference, but for those million flip contests at a youth group overnighter, you'll see the difference!

Q: Do herrings fart to communicate?
A: They just might - kinda like some youth group kids I know! For humans, farting has been known to clear a room. But for some types of herring, flatulence might be a way to "talk" undetected by predators - helping them stay alive. Just make sure to hold your nose when swimming with the herrings!

Q: Is the combined weight of all the world's ants is equal to that of all the humans on earth?
A: It's true! What ants lack in size, they more than make up for in sheer numbers. According to renowned entomologist E.O. Wilson, there are an estimated 10,000,000,000,000 ants on earth, and their combined weight is equivalent to the entire human population. That's roughly 1.6 million ants for each person.

Q: Is it true that a cockroach can survive for several days without its head?
A: Yes!. Roaches do not need their heads to breathe — oxygen is absorbed through spiracles (the insect version of gills) on their body — and they can survive for a month without food. A headless cockroach will live for about a week until it dies of thirst.
